Viet Nam: Release 13 activists jailed on baseless charges, stop crackdown on dissidents

VRNs (Jan 09^th, 2013) – Amnesty – The conviction and heavy sentencing of 13 peaceful Catholic activists in Viet Nam today flies in the face of justice and is part of an escalating government crackdown on freedom of expression, Amnesty International said.

A court in Nghe An province today sentenced the 13 activists to between three and 13 years’ imprisonment on charges of undertaking “activities aimed at overthrowing” the government. One other activist was given a suspended sentence.   

“We urge the Vietnamese authorities to release the activists immediately and unconditionally,” said Rupert Abbott, Amnesty International’s Researcher on Viet Nam.

“To misconstrue the activities of the activists as trying to overthrow the government is baseless – they have been imprisoned only for exercising their right to freedom of expression.”

The 14 activists who stood trial – 12 men and two women – were first arrested in mid-2011 on suspicion of ties to the US-based political party Viet Tan, a group calling for peaceful political reform in Viet Nam, which the Vietnamese government has labelled as terrorist.

Among the activists are students, bloggers, community workers and supporters of prisoner of conscience Cu Huy Ha Vu, who was imprisoned in April 2011 for allegedly “spreading anti-state propaganda” after calling for a multi-party system in online articles.

“Last year saw the Vietnamese government step up its crackdown on government critics and peaceful activists,” said Abbott.

 “The convictions of the 14 activists illustrate a deeply worrying trend, and suggest that the crackdown is set to continue in 2013,” he said.

Statement on the Conviction of 14 Redemptorist Bloggers in Nghe An Province

We are deeply troubled by reports that the Supreme People’s Court of Nghe An Province convicted 14 Catholic Redemptorist bloggers on charges related to their exercise of their rights to freedom of expression. These bloggers were convicted of “subversion of the administration” (Article 79) and sentenced to prison terms ranging from 3-13 years.

These convictions, along with the detention of human rights lawyer and blogger Le Quoc Quan since December 27, 2012 and the upholding of sentences against bloggers Nguyen Van Hai (also known as Dieu Cay), Ta Phong Tan, and Phan Thanh Hai, are part of a disturbing human rights trend in Vietnam.

The government’s treatment of these individuals appears to be inconsistent with Vietnam’s obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, as well as the provisions of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights relating to freedom of expression and due process. We call on the government to release these individuals and all other prisoners of conscience immediately.

Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-46), Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on Vietnam,today issued a strong statement in support of human rights and democracy in Vinh, Vietnam. Rep. Sanchez also condemned the Vietnamese authority’s sentencing of fourteen human rights defenders: Ho Duc Hoa, Dang Xuan Dieu, Paulus Le Son, Nguyen Van Duyet, Nguyen Van Oai, Ho Van Oanh, Nguyen Dinh Cuong, Nguyen Xuan Anh, Thai Van Dung, Tran Minh Nhat, Nong Hung Anh, Nguyen Dang Vinh Phuc, Nguyen Dang Minh Man and Dang Ngoc Minh.

“For the past two days, the Vietnamese Communist authorities have put 14 human rights defenders on trial, where they were charged of subversion and trying to overthrow the government. In reality, they were only strong advocates for social justice and they peacefully demonstrated against Chinese territorial aggression.  The final product of an unjust criminal justice system in this subversion case was a verdict of 100 years imprisonment forced upon 14 patriots.  

“Perhaps we should not be surprised by the outcome, but we should be outraged! Because if you look at these 14 human rights defenders, most of them are in their 20’s and early 30’s, they are sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, loyal friends, faithful and all responsible members of the society - they fought for what they thought were right for their country.

“The situation in Vietnam is a challenge to the conscience of the world. It has drawn international outrage as an emblem of the Vietnamese authority's intolerance of dissent. It is clear that the Vietnamese government did not take our policies and recommendations seriously. This is the reason why the United States must take serious action against the Government of Vietnam for their continuous human rights violations.

“Freedom and democracy only have meaning if we’re willing to put those principles into action, and I will continue to call on my colleagues to urge President Obama’s Administration to take a stand against the abuses taking place in Vietnam and elsewhere.”

Vietnam: Hohe Haftstrafen für Gegner der kommunistischen Regierung

Ein Gericht in Vietnam hat am Mittwoch 13 wegen Umsturzversuchs angeklagte Gegner der kommunistischen Regierung zu mehrjährigen Haftstrafen verurteilt.

Ein Anwalt der Angeklagten teilte mit, die drei Führungsmitglieder der aus Katholiken, Bloggern und Studierenden bestehenden Gruppe müssten 13 Jahre ins Gefängnis, anschließend würden sie für fünf Jahre unter Hausarrest gestellt. Zehn weitere erhielten demnach Haftstrafen zwischen drei und acht Jahren.

Prozess gegen 14 Oppositionelle in Vietnam begonnen

Wegen Umsturzversuches hat im kommunistischen Vietnam am Dienstag ein Prozess gegen 14 Oppositionelle begonnen. Nach Angaben eines Gerichtsmitarbeiters begann das Verfahren in der Provinz Nghe An rund 300 Kilometer südlich der Hauptstadt Hanoi. Das Urteil könnte demnach bereits ab Mittwoch fallen.
